5th–6th Grade Summer Group Review 📚✏️

This small-group class is designed to help students strengthen reading comprehension and math skills while building confidence for the upcoming school year. Each week we’ll split our time between novel-based reading instruction and targeted math practice.

Students will read and discuss the classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while practicing key comprehension strategies and vocabulary skills. Math instruction will focus on essential upper-elementary concepts including fractions, decimals, geometry, and problem solving.

Students entering 5th and 6th grade

Reading Skills We’ll Practice
Using Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, students will develop deeper comprehension skills as we read together and discuss the story.

🕵️ Reading Detectives – identifying main ideas and important details
🔎 Inference Investigators – reading between the lines and drawing conclusions
📖 Plot Trackers – analyzing characters, setting, and story development
💬 Meaning Masters – vocabulary and context clues within the novel
🏛️ Root Word Explorers – Greek & Latin roots to unlock unfamiliar words
Students will engage in guided discussion, prediction, character analysis, and vocabulary work throughout the novel.

Math Skills We’ll Build
This class focuses on strengthening foundational skills while preparing students for more advanced upper-elementary math.

⚡ Math Fact Masters – fluency with all four operations
🥷 Word Problem Strategists – multi-step problem solving
🍕 Fraction Experts – equivalent fractions, operations, and models
🔢 Fraction-to-Decimal Connectors – relating fractions and decimals
📐 Geometry Explorers – angles, area, perimeter, and shapes
📊 Data Detectives – graphs, charts, and basic statistics

Each class will include interactive instruction, guided practice, and engaging activities designed to build both skill and confidence.

Students may occasionally need paper, pencil, and basic supplies. Any additional materials will always be communicated ahead of time.

This class is perfect for students who want to strengthen comprehension, improve math confidence, and prepare for the transition into upper elementary and middle school math.
